2024 Summer Intensive

Call for Applications

The Black Arts Institute invites applications for The Black Arts Institute 2024 Summer Intensive, which supports actors and theater professionals to comprehensively explore Black theater traditions across the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Featuring numerous courses and sessions hosted by world-class faculty, including scene study, voice and speech, movement and alignment, historical lectures, industry talks, and more. This summer’s intensive will include archival visits and other group excursions exploring New York’s theater world. The program will culminate with an evening of performances from the 2024 cohort. 

Previous faculty and lecturers have included: Stephen McKinley Henderson, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Phylicia Rashad, Michele Shay, Sonia Sanchez, Michael Eric Dyson, Jerome Preston Bates, Robert O’Hara, and Camille A. Brown.

Program Dates: July 15 – August 9, Monday through Friday, approximately 9:00 am to 5:30 pm
Location: The Billie Holiday Theatre in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn.

Eligibility
While holding a heavy emphasis on acting, participants can be students, graduate students, theater professionals, performance artists, and others invested in Black theater traditions. Applicants must be 18 and over.

All accepted students will receive a full tuition scholarship to attend the program. Students will be responsible for their travel and housing costs, excluding off-site group activities.

How to apply:
Applicants must fill out an online application form, including submitting two monologues and short-answer questions.

The priority deadline is May 31st, 2024. If there are remaining spots open, there will be a rolling submission deadline until June 15th, 2024. If there are no remaining spots following the priority deadline, students can still submit applications for future programs and will automatically be considered for priority application reviews.

All applicants will be notified of acceptance by June 7th, 2024. Rolling admissions notifications will arrive by June 28th, 2024, at the latest.
